Who We Are
We are a First Tech Challenge team with the IDEA Homeschool program in Fairbanks, Alaska. Many of our members were part of the First Lego League (grades 4-8) and wanted to pursue the next level of FIRST - FIRST Tech Challenge.
What is FIRST Tech Challenge?
FIRST, which stands for “For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology,” is a nonprofit organization founded by Dean Kamen in 1989. More than just a robot competition, FIRST programs combine gracious professionalism with technology to create an environment that fosters a deeper appreciation for science and technology.
FIRST Tech Challenge teams (grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have!” Guided by adult Coaches and Mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles (like keeping an engineering notebook) while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and sharing ideas. The robot kit may be reusable from year to year and can be programmed using a variety of languages, including Java. Teams also must raise funds, design, and market their team brand, and do community outreach for which they can win awards.
FIRST CORE VALUES
Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas
Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems
Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world
Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences
Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together
Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do!
